  | 34 members signed in at our July meeting. We spent the day sewing Stockings for Soldiers and/or working on various other projects. Betty Jean ordered pizzas for dinner and then we took a break at 7:00 p.m. for a short business meeting, Show and Tell and the raffles.
Betty Jean announced that starting with the September meeting, we will have a new meeting place - the Rachel Kohl Library, located on Smith Bridge Road at the entrance to the Middle and Elementary Schools. Enter through the front door and go straight ahead to the meeting room. Seating is auditorium-style (not at tables) and the chairs are comfy with backs! We can store all of our equipment (library cart, quilt frame, PA system, easel, etc.) there. The monthly charge for the room is quite reasonable and the library would be available to us for our Board meetings and workshops on Saturdays (at an additional charge). Ellen McLaughlin presented Betty Jean Boyd with a teacup quilt as a thank you for her service as President for the past 3 years. Blocks were made by some of the Board members and committee chairs. Ellen assembled and quilted the quilt. Betty Jean also received a tea set and a bottle of Quilter’s Wine. |

  | BVQ wishes to recognize Ellen Nobles-Harris for all of her efforts on the raffle quilt, from the design stage through display and ticket sales. Ellen was at Quilt Odyssey in Hershey in July for the duration of the show (at her own expense). BVQ thanks those members who helped Ellen sell raffle tickets for the quilt and the American Girl doll at the show.
If you haven’t yet picked up your 2010 raffle quilt tickets, please see Ellen at any Guild meeting. You receive two books of tickets with your paid membership, which you may sell or keep (don't forget to turn in the ticket stubs!). Please consider asking for extra tickets that you can sell on behalf of the guild. If you have any suggestions for venues to display our raffle quilt and sell chances, please let Ellen Nobles-Harris or Betty Jean Boyd know - our sales need a boost! The quilt will be raffled at our quilt show in October, so time is running out! |

AUCTION: Note from Katy: This is me jumping for joy! Very high! I have LOTS of fabric now. We would still like to get the fall fabric (August) and holiday fabric (September) but I am going to be happily stuffing baskets with books, fabric, patterns, and inspiration! Also with many non-quilting related items. Please think about a recipe to donate and keep an eye on the wish list for updates. Thanks so much! Anyone who brings in one of these items will be entered for the monthly gift drawing (small item). Donors of bigger items will be entered into a drawing for a $50.00 gift certificate at the end of the auction. Check the Auction Wish List which will be updated frequently to list items needed to complete theme baskets.Back to Show links
We hope you are all working on making something for the auction. Everything welcome from placemats to big quilts! The Auction is our major fundraiser so this is your chance to make your contribution to BVQ.

BAZAAR: Chairperson Christine Rushton is looking for some people to help her organize all the fabric she has received so for the Bazaar. She would like to meet at her house in the evening sometime after the July meeting. Please let her know if you're willing to help. She is continuing to collect items for the Quilt Show Bazaar - see below for details.

HANGING: Get an early look at the show without crowds, first dibs on the items in the Bazaar and earn free admission to the show! How do you do this? Volunteer to hang quilts on Friday, October 15th, starting at 10:00AM. Call/email or see Ellen Nobles-Harris at the guild meeting to sign up. Tall relatives will be warmly welcomed. Several extra step ladders would be appreciated also. We will be working until the hanging is completed. The more people who come to work, the shorter the time. Thank you for your assistance!

PUBLICITY: Wanted! Names of newspapers where you live!
The publicity committee of the quilt show would like to know the names of newspapers in areas where our members live. If you could cut out the information on where to send these community announcements or happenings and give them to Maureen Bonnes or Betty Jean Boyd, we will include them in all the information that will go out in the fall. It is also needed for the monthly announcement. If you find an announcement of our meeting in the paper, cut it out and give to Betty Jean Boyd. Thanks for your help.
Don't forget to get a supply of flyers to distribute to friends and family, and to leave at quilt shops and shows that you visit as well as community and church bulletin boards and wherever else you think there might be folks who would be interested in attending our show. Remember that this event serves to educate the public about the art and craft of quilting. We want showcase our work and to let people to know that quilts aren't just for beds anymore!

REGISTRATION: Important Information - please read!!
Our insurer now requires a description and photo of each quilt that is entered in the show. Please note that for each quilt you enter in the show, you will need to fill out an insurance information form (available at BVQ meetings and downloadable here) and include it along with your entry form. You will need to provide a total of TWO photos of your entry, one for the quilt show hanging committee and one for the insurance company. Photos of a completed top are acceptable.
We hope you are working on your entry/entries for the quilt show - the deadline to submit entry forms (September 14) will be here before you know it! We will need AT LEAST 100 quilts to display, so get your motors running!! Download the rules and entry and insurance forms in pdf format (see below).
If you need inspiration for a quilt in our show theme, Something New from Something Old, think about making a scrappy quilt using fabrics leftover from other projects or even old clothes! (OR raid the BVQ Scrap Bag!) There are some great websites for scrapoholics - check out www.quiltville.com for lots of free patterns, tutorials and tips on organizing your scraps. Another great resource is http://www.ufo-rphanage.com/article_taming-scraps.shtml.
And don't forget the UFO/USO Challenges! Get 'em out - sew 'em up - move 'em out!!
Contact Lil Koster if you have any questions.
The LIVE auction will be for items that are big enough to incite people to bid on them, such as items made and donated by members. Obviously quilts, tablerunners, placemats, bags, clothing, etc.; however, it does not have to be quilt related. If you paint, cross-stitch, do stained glass, build birdhouses, or anything else auction-able, please feel free to contribute. We would also welcome themed baskets. If you want to fill a basket, big impressive ones will go in the live auction! Smaller cute ones are welcome for the raffle of baskets. (Note: Katy already has more than enough empty baskets so she doesn't need any more.)
To help encourage everyone to make an item for the LIVE auction, we will give all donors a raffle ticket for a $50 gift certificate! Examples: something you made; a big basket of goodies you filled yourself; a bundle of fat quarters. If you have already donated and didn't get a raffle ticket, please see Katy to get one.
The RAFFLE part of the auction will be gift baskets. All kinds of items are welcome - fabric, thread, quilt books and kits, tools, patterns, and also DVDs, CDs, new bath and body products, mugs, books, anything you would spend a ticket or more trying to win! Check the Auction Wish List frequently for items we need to turn these into must-have delights. Here are the fabrics (fat quarters or larger) we are collecting at upcoming Guild meetings:Anyone who brings in one of these items will be entered for the monthly gift drawing (small item).

  | Thanks to our enthusiastic members, the Scrap Bag inventory has been somewhat reduced as of late, so your donations are welcome (as always!)...
Please limit your donations to quilting fabric scraps no less than 1" wide. Save your pieces larger than fat quarters to donate to Guild auctions or the quilt show bazaar. Donate your unwanted non-quilting fabrics to Goodwill or another charity that can use them. You can help the Scrap Bag Lady by smoothing out and sorting your scraps by color or theme and placing them in zipper plastic bags. Large bags of crumpled, frayed scraps take a while to deal with! And please don't empty your sewing room trash can into a bag to donate! Your Scrap Bag Lady would prefer to spend her time quilting than weeding out thread bits, candy wrappers, etc. Thank you for your help! |
A. Quilting cottons only, please! 3/4" wide strips longer than a foot or so are great for making clothesline bowls. For non-strip scraps, we'll take anything at least 1" on any side. Also, we'll taks selvages with the writing and color marks that are 1½" wide and at least 4" long - please bag these separately!Q. Are we collecting batting scraps?
A. Not at this time. Due to the large donations of scraps at the March meeting (thank you, everyone!), your Scrap Bag Lady has quite enough to store and tote! However, if anyone needs batting scraps, just ask and we will find you some.Q. Are members allowed to use the scraps for projects they are working on personally? Sometimes you need just a bit of something!
A. You may take scraps for your own use, but we hope that you will contribute scraps of your own at some point in time. One of our goals for the Scrap Bag is help to keep precious fabric out of the landfills! It can be our green initiative!Q. Much of the fabric in the Scrap Bag is in individual zipper bags. Can I take fabric out of those bags or do I have to take the whole bag?
A. Feel free to take whatever scraps you'd like. If you need a bag to put them in and there are no bags available, ask Lil Koster, SBQ (Scrap Bag Queen), for one.Q. What can I make with those scraps?
A. Grab some red, white and blue scraps for a Quilt of Valor, or grab a baggie or two and make a 9" x 12" quilt for the Priority: Alzheimer's Quilt project. Need more ideas? click here for a .pdf document with lots of suggestions.
